1. Be intentional
Hold an intention to create or as fellow coach Janice would say – set some time to play!  Simply create space for you to create! You will be surprised what is possible. In fact the creative journey starts with an intention.

2. Clear your mind
Having a settled calmness of mind is ideal for creativity. Rituals such as breathing exercises can assist you to achieve this.  A clear mind allows you to focus and be creative.

3. Un-clutter your space
Create a conducive space for you to create.  Personally I find an open empty space conducive for creativity.  Whatever works for you, create it and immerse yourself in it.

4. Listen to music
Music especially calming tunes and symphonies have a way of stilling our essence and being.  Various tunes work for different times and certainly type of music preference varies from person to person.  I personally find classical music a great boon to my creativity. Some days however some loud Hip-Hop does the trick. Whatever works for you!

5. Take a break at intervals
The worst enemy to creativity is routine and monotony. Be intentional to break this by taking breaks at intervals or stepping away from the task at hand. This shifts are conducive in sustaining the creative flow.

6. Be spontaneous
Don’t over-think and have the courage to break the rules!  Have a ‘create anyway‘ mindset that allows you to be creative at will.  Simply go for it and don’t think too much. Over-think is the enemy of creativity.

7. Have a blank canvas to fill
How would you know that you are creating? And what would be evidence for that? Provide a creative space where this becomes evident; for a writer this could be paper, a painter canvas, a musician a recorder etc. Creativity fills something – provide that canvas!

8. Exercise
Working your body has a ripple effect on the rest of your being. Exercise has been proven to stimulate the mind. The mind works magic with positive stimuli; you will be surprised. You will also benefit from the faster blood circulation and energy generated as a result.

9. Laughter
Humour is a great booster for creativity.  Laugh often and laugh long and hard. It’s not only good for your lungs, it’s also good for your mind.  Be it funny clips on YouTube, light moments with colleagues or seeing humour in your various contexts – laughter is great booster for your creativity.

10. Tools
What tools allow you to be creative?  Is it the graphics editing suite in your Mac? Is it a rack of pencils? Is it the doodling software on your PC?  Whatever it is! Be equipped and always have your creative tools at hand to indulge at any moment you are inspired to create.  For me my creative day wouldn’t be complete without my Smart phone (Old S3!) and Evernote!

11. Nurture ‘your feel good’
What makes you feel good about yourself and inspires a positive train of thought?  It may be a combination of some of the above rituals like music and exercise or it may be something different.  Whatever it is – find it and indulge it often.  Remember good things flow from your feel good.  Remember sometimes it may just be a simple thing as a nice cup of coffee as we discovered last week’s post!
